Assessment & Standards: OPS Mathematics Program
The New York State Department of Education has recently (March 15, 2005) revised and approved its standards for Mathematics and English. An Introduction to the New Mathematics and English programs (pdf) has been provided to help educators and parents get acquainted with the expectations and requirements of the examinations. The New York State curriculum for Science, Social Studies and other subject areas can be found af the NYS Standards Website . The North American Divison K-12 Curriculum Guides & Resources are listed to the left. Oakview Preparatory School's curriculum is an integration of both curricula.
MATHEMATICS ProgramOakview Preparatory School's 2005-2006 Mathematics program is closely aligned with the 2005 revision of the New York State Mathematics standards and presented in the table below. The New York State Examination Schedule specifies that the 2005-2006 Mathematics Exams will be administered in the month of March. Thus, there exist a body of knowledge that the students must acquire before March (Pre-March Knowledge) and another after March (Post-March Knowledge). The Assessment Modules indicate how this knowledge is assessed during the school year. There is a deliberate effort to align all mathematics testing during the school year with the prescribed standards of both the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists Department of Education and the New York State standards for Mathematics. Oakview will continue to develope its Standards-based Assessment Program.
Understanding the NYS Mathematics Standard The three basic goals of the NYS mathematics standard is to enable students to:
Seventh-day Adventists Approah to the Teaching Mathematics It is important to note the Seventh-day Adventist educator's approach (pdf) when pursuing these goals. While learning these concepts students learn that God, the Creator of mathematics, is is orderly, precise, and infinite and that He delights in our discovery of mathematics. Analytical and critical thinking along with problem-solving skills is applied to life experiences. Further, mathematical applications extend to such topics as stewardship, responsible citizenship, and balanced lifestyle.
New York State Mathematics Curriculum New York State has represented conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and problem solving as Five Process Strands and Five Content Strands. These strands help to define what students should know and be able to do as a result of their engagement in the study of mathematics. The Bands within the Content Strands add another level of specificity. The state has also provided guidance on calculator use in the grades 3-8 examinations in March.
